Ruin Porn

Are photojournalists obsessed with “ruin porn”? Reporter Thomas Morton recently visited Detroit, where photographers have been flocking to take pictures of the city’s decrepit factories and abandoned buildings. But Morton says these photos, which he calls ruin porn, paint a misleading picture of the city.

San Francisco Bay Area Art Photography Group Visits Neighboring Byron

They set out from all corners of the Bay Area finally converging at Byron’s Hot Springs Resort and discuss their photography and explorations.

Photos Sought for Juried Exhibit on City’s History

Gary Art Works, South Shore Centre for the Arts, and Chicago Urban Explorers are asking photographers to help them tell the history of Gary in photos. Proceeds from sales at the show will benefit Gary Art Works and South Shore Dance Alliance.

* Submissions for “Gary, Indiana: From … Now … On” are due on or before Thursday, Oct. 15.

* Photographers should submit three images taken after October 2007, in conventional or digital form, along with their contact information and a $35 entry fee, to the Lake Street Gallery, 613 S. Lake St., Gary, IN 46403.

* Winners will be notified by mail or phone. The exhibit runs Nov. 1 to 30 at South Shore Centre for the Arts, 665 S. Lake St., Gary.

Louisiana College Eyes Central Louisiana State Hospital for Med School

There have been talks with the state to lease 100 acres on the grounds of Central Louisiana State Hospital in Pineville. The piece of property, which has access from Shamrock Street, would be the site for most of the medical school’s educational operation.
