Western State Hospital’s Dairy Barn Named Landmark

The Western State Hospital Dairy Barn and Milk House was built in the 1930s to give hospital patients a place to work. It was part of their therapeutic mental treatment and is now a new historic landmark in Virginia.

Lost Souls Contained In "Library Of Dust"

David Maisel’s book, Library of Dust, is the collection of numbered copper canisters, roughly 3,500 of them, stacked on pine shelves, each one holding the ashes of a cremated patient at the Oregon State Hospital.

Due to corrosion from external heat and humidity, and seepage of internal contents, the copper vessels had mutated into objects of uniquely melancholy and macabre beauty. A singular pattern of shape, color, texture, and line created by the literal elements making up a particular person.

Hospital Building Renovates into Museum

The historic J Building at Oregon State Hospital could soon house a Museum of Mental Health. Hoffman Construction and Campbell Crane and Rigging Service last month removed the J Building’s cupola for restoration.

Donations for the museum can currently be made to Salem’s Mission Mill Museum, which preserves Mission houses as well as relics from the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, one of Oregon’s earliest industries. To follow Pine’s archival process, visit http://oshmuseum.wordpress.com/

In a span of five months a controversial proposal to house more than 100 “adjudicated (male) youths” in Building 12 at Norristown State Hospital was blocked and eventually diverted by a mix of angry Norristown neighbors, state representatives and Norristown officials.
