The State Hospital and ‘Shutter Island’

A “Medfield Only” viewing of the movie Shutter Island will be taking place as a fundraiser for our schools on Saturday February 27th at Patriot’s Place. Sponsored by the Medfield Coalition for Public Education), the event will feature a movie that filmed many scenes at the former Medfield State Hospital.

Saving a Piece of History

In the state capitol, Senate President Richard Codey is working on a plan to preserve the Morris County landmark. According Jason Butkowski, a spokesperson for Codey, the senator has authored a bill calling for the organization of a task force. The bill has been introduced and is awaiting committee consideration.

Morris County’s Washington Building to be Demolished

The Washington Building at the corner of Washington Street and Schuyler Place in Morristown, New Jersey is set to be demolished with the goal to store court records in the former Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital otherwise known as the Central Avenue Complex.

The funds come from a $297,000 economic development special project grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which the county received three years ago.

Medfield State Hospital Walkthrough

State officials will make a new site walk of the former Medfield State Hospital site on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 9:30 a.m. to survey for the clean up of relict debris and the remediation of hazardous waste on the 269-acre property.

In addition, portions of the property will be transferred to other state agencies and the Town of Medfield and will retain a small portion of the property.

Redevelopment plans will be guided by the Reuse Plan, negotiated with the Town, which includes rehabilitation of a majority of the Campus and the construction of several new buildings to provide 440 dwelling units and approximately 41,000 sf of office and community center space.

Closing Clarinda Mental Health Institute Helps Nobody

A plan approved by the Iowa Senate last week calls for shifting patients at Clarinda to other places such as Glenwood or the Iowa Veterans Home.

The Clarinda Mental Health Institute is a hospital and nursing home for elderly people with especially challenging behavioral and mental issues. It’s the only state-run psychiatric unit for geriatric patients.

Lyman School Property for Sale

Some of the Lyman school property was redeveloped, but much of it remains unused. Governor Patrick wants to expedite the disposal of twenty state properties such as the Lyman School, which are considered surplus.

The sale or lease of these properties would generate revenue for the state and could add to local property tax rolls.
