Hundreds of Millions of Dollars Spent to Maintain Crumbling, Vacant Government Buildings

Across the country, vacant, underused and sometimes dangerous federal buildings are siphoning millions in taxpayer dollars.

Federal Building Number 8 in Washington DC is worth $100 million and has been sitting empty since 2002. The Government Accountability Office estimates that the Veterans Administration is spending $170 million a year maintaining its vacant and underused buildings.

Asbestos Dislocates Patients at Wyoming State Hospital

The Wyoming Department of Health moved 20 patients and 48 staff members out of the Karn building at Wyoming State Hospital after asbestos was discovered in the ceiling during heating and air conditioning renovation. An asbestos mitigation company has been brought in for further testing and cleanup.

Psychiatrist Calls for Ethics Cleanup

American psychiatrists need to break away from a “culture of influence” created by their financial dealings with the drug industry, the head of the National Institute of Mental Health said in a leading medical journal.

With the signing of the health care overhaul, legislation requires drugmakers to file annual reports to the government on their financial ties to doctors such as reporting of gifts, entertainment, food, research money and other fees and grants.

House Votes to Remove the Word ‘Retardation’

House lawmakers unanimously voted to remove the word “retardation” from the name of the Rhode Island state Department of Mental Health, Retardation, and Hospitals. It will be changed to the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.

The bill passed 67-0 in the House and must be passed by the Senate.

Allentown State Hospital Public Meeting

Autistic Student Jumps From Ambulance

Ryan Emory was being driven back to the William S. Hall Psychiatric Hospital when he loosened the gurney’s straps and jumped out of the back of the ambulance as it traveled down Interstate 85. Emory died at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

In Haiti, Mental Health System is in Collapse

Inside the Psychiatric Hospital patients lie naked on the concrete floors and are padlocked in small cells. Feces clots the gutter outside a ward where urine pooled under metal cots without mattresses. After the earthquake, the hospital evacuated most of its mentally ill patients to tents outside on the grass.

Nicholas Rose, a psychiatrist from England, said, “It’s straight out of Hogarth, really,” referring to the 18th century engravings of an insane asylum by the artist William Hogarth.
