Union Workers Protest at Fulton State Hospital

Members of the union representing Fulton State Hospital employees gathered Wednesday afternoon in the Biggs Forensic Center parking lot to protest Gov. Jay Nixon’s planned cut of about 300 jobs at the hospital.

Union leaders planted 300 small signs in a grassy area near the parking lot.

North Dakota State Hospital Celebrates 125 Years

North Dakota State Hospital celebrates 125 years by opening the grounds to the public for tours May 5 – 7.

The Opening Ceremony is on May 5th at 10:00 AM in the All Faiths Chapel. It will include brief comments by Gov. Hoeven and other dignitaries and a program about the hospital’s history. Tours of the campus and facilities will follow at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM and will conclude at the newly established State Hospital Museum, which features artifacts, historical pictures, and more.

Public events on May 6th include tours at 10:00 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM, and a Miles for Mental Health Walk sponsored by Mental Health America of North Dakota that begins at 5:30 PM.

On May 7th, public tours will be offered at 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM.
Hospital staff will bury a time capsule at 3:30 PM in front of the LaHaug Building.

Individuals interested in participating in one of the scheduled public tours on May 5-7 should stop at the fourth floor of the Learning Resource Center prior to a scheduled tour.

Disney Threatens to Ban Urban Explorer

Shane Perez’s visit to the abandoned Discovery Island is creating a buzz with the park. Perez recently wrote in his blog and posted pictures about a trip to the zoological attraction that closed in 1999. Disney said it may ban Perez for life from all of its properties.

Two Fires Burn at Hudson State Hospital

Firefighters put out a fire Friday afternoon at Hudson State Hospital only to be called back again for another that blazed throughout the night to a three-story staff house. The building is a total loss.

The earlier fire caused damage to several rooms in Ryon Hall about nine-and-a-half hours prior to the fire at the staff house.

Pennhurst Remembered as Milestone Site for Disabilities Civil Rights

A ceremony held last weekend at Spring Hollow Golf Club near the Pennhurst grounds brought together panelists to discuss the tragedy and triumph of Pennhurst. A documentary film and speakers told of the past and the shame of Pennhurst, and others noted the influence and the change that came as a result.

Remembering Pennhurst: The Shame That Led to Lasting Change

The program, “Tragedy & Triumph, Telling the Pennhurst Story” featured a dedication of an historical marker on Route 724 at the site of the former campus. The program commemorated the 25th anniversary of the approval of the settlement agreement in Halderman v. Pennhurst, the federal lawsuit which ultimately closed Pennhurst.

New Building Could Mark New Era for Saint Elizabeths Hospital

When the patients begin moving into the new building this month many will have single rooms. Bathrooms will be for use by only one person at a time and the heating and cooling systems will work.

Constructed over three years at a cost of $161 million, this building is intend to create a more effective hospital that stabilizes conditions and prepares the patients to return to their communities.
