Man Pleads Guilty in Norwich Arson

Steven Lamotte, 23, was charged Tuesday with third-degree arson for a fire he set to the Norwich administration building on August 11, 2007. Lamotte soaked crumpled paper with gasoline and lit it on fire. State prosecutors have recommended a sentencing of three years in prison followed by three years probation.

No Deal for Reale

Residents overwhelmingly said no to Reale’s proposal to develop Norwich by a two-thirds majority vote. The town’s redevelopment agency now plans to open up the process on June 15 when it will seek formal requests for proposals to develop the property from other interested developers.

Preston Residents Petition for Sale of Hospital

One-hundred and fifty residents signed a petition asking the board of selectmen to schedule a town meeting that would ask voters whether the town should accept World LLC’s offer to buy a portion of Norwich.

If approved by selectmen, a town meeting would be scheduled to ask voters whether the town should accept World LLC’s offer to buy – World LLC has made repeated offers to buy the property.

“Great Site for Training”

Norwich will be used for Search and Rescue, smoke training, ladder and hose training and rapid intervention team training to rescue firefighters in danger inside a building and possibly simulate a war zone, a dangerous fire or even a terrorist bombing by the National Guard this summer.

Cleanup Begins

The cleanup of environmental hazards at Norwich began Monday by Manafort Bros. Inc. Workers tackled the collapsed utility tunnels behind the administration building, which have asbestos and lead paint in them, and are expected to take three weeks to complete.
