Shelves of Forgotten Souls at Oregon State Hospital

May 18, 2011 Leave a comment

Canisters No. 1864 and No. 2664 are no longer with the group of roughly 3,500 other canisters at Oregon State Hospital by one man’s efforts and a push by the hospital and lawmakers to reunite the remains with their families.

Officials hope the launch of an online database [http://www.oregon.gov/OHA/mentalhealth/osh/cremains.shtml] detailing the canisters yet to be claimed will help other relatives reunite, or unite for the first time.

Oregon State Hospital Seeks Relatives of Remains

February 1, 2011 Leave a comment

One-hundred-and-twenty people have claimed the remains of loved ones who had been left behind in corroding copper canisters that had fused together in a storage area dubbed the “room of forgotten souls” at Oregon State Hospital.

There are roughly three-thousand-five-hundred canisters that have not been claimed and hospital officials are hoping a new online list (located here) will help them reunite living relatives with the forgotten patients and prison inmates who died between 1914 and the 1970s.

Families who identify relatives on this list should contact Medical Records Services at 503-945-2976. You can also reach Medical Records Services by e-mail at oshcremains@state.or.us or postal mail: OSH Medical Record Services, 2600 Center St. NE, Salem, OR, 97301.

Doctor Michael Robinson planned to resign in the wake of an Oregon State Hospital death scandal is now accusing the psychiatric facility of trying to force him out and ruin his reputation.

Robinson was under internal investigation for his treatment of a patient who died in autumn. He claimed the hospital did not live up to its expectations and he believed it imperative to defend his reputation and rebut the false charges levied against him. As a result, he did not resign and planned to continue his career with the Hospital but Robinson’s bid to withdraw his resignation was rejected by the hospital and directed him to turn in his state-issued work badge and pick up his final paycheck.

Robinson had been relieved of direct patient care in April pending results of an investigation into the treatment of patient Moises Perez.
