After working for nearly a decade to close Dorothea Dix Hospital, state mental health administrators now intend to keep a sizable number of staff and patients at the aging Raleigh facility for years.

The first hospital in the United States was built in 1751, called the Pennsylvania Hospital, and its first six admittances were psychiatric patients.

The first public hospital exclusive to psychiatry in the United States was built in 1841, called the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, and it's first Superintendent was Dr. Thomas S. Kirkbride.

The first private psychiatric hospital in the United States was built in 1813, called the 'Asylum for Persons Deprived of the Use of Their Reason', a Quaker Hospital now referred to as 'Friends Hospital'.
